My entire life I have struggled with my weight and it wasn’t until 2011 that I started to take action. When I was 19, my 17 year old sister, Taylor, was killed in a car accident. I was absolutely crushed and the only way I could keep my mind occupied was by exercising. I lost close to 100 pounds really quickly and really unhealthy and it was not something I could maintain. Once I stopped exercising three times a day and eating more food, I started to gain the weight back. In July of 2013, I was in a jet skiing accident where I shattered my hand and needed four surgeries to fix it. I was extemely lucky that it was only my hand because the outcome could have been much worse. My weight continued to rise at this point until 2015 where I got a personal trainer. It just was not motivating enough for me but I continued to go because I felt like I had no other option. Fast forward to 2017, I found a group fitness class that I loved but my hand couldn’t handle it anymore. I scheduled my fifth surgery and knew I needed an instructor led fitness class that would challenge me and that I would be able to continue with after my surgery. I signed up or Orangetheory the month before my surgery knowing I would have something to look forward to when I came back. I had my surgery in December but in January ended up with blood clots in both of my lungs, my left lung being so bad that part of it was dead. I was extremely discouraged because it pushed me back from being able to start at Orangetheory again. I worked for a few weeks at home on my treadmill to ease back in. I was only able to walk for about five minutes without being in pain and feeling like I was going to pass out because I couldn’t breathe with part of my lung being dead.

I was able to start focusing on my small victories, like being able to run for 5 minutes again, working my way up to where I can last the whole block running, and now starting to increase my speed. I am not so hard on myself anymore because while I am in class, I remind myself where I started and how I’ve grown, knowing that the changes are coming and will continue to come in time. While it has been extremely difficult it has also been very rewarding! I really enjoy Orangetheory and am very thankful for the opportunity to workout there!
